Great concept and well-executed. I noticed that when I ran out of health it just refilled my health -- can't say I'm sad about that, actually, though some text might be nice like "A local farmer takes pity on you and nurses you back to health."  I really like the clue system.

Very nice.  I liked the clues leading you towards the place to dig.  The rations depletion when going uphill made navigating the map interesting, too.  Well done.
